The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities: Catalyzing Inclusion and Empowerment

With its unwavering commitment to empowerment, the DEPwD plays a pivotal role in ensuring equal opportunities, accessibility, and social integration for PwDs across the nation. 

Comprehensive Policy Framework:  

The DEPwD operates under a robust policy framework designed to promote the rights and welfare of PwDs. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, serves as the cornerstone of this framework, ensuring legal protection, non-discrimination, and access to services for PwDs. The department’s policies encompass various domains, including education, employment, accessibility, assistive devices, social security, and rehabilitation, aiming to holistically address the multifaceted needs of PwDs. 

Promoting Inclusive Education and Employment: 

 Recognizing the transformative power of education, the DEPwD facilitates inclusive education initiatives, ensuring that PwDs have access to quality education at all levels. It promotes barrier-free infrastructure, assistive technologies, and trained teachers to create inclusive learning environments. Moreover, the department endeavors to enhance employment opportunities for PwDs through skill development programs, job fairs, and affirmative action policies, promoting their economic independence and social integration. 

Enabling Accessibility and Assistive Devices:  

The DEPwD is committed to promoting accessible environments and equal participation for PwDs. It formulates guidelines for universal accessibility in public infrastructure, transportation, and information technology. Additionally, the department provides assistive devices such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, and prosthetic limbs to enhance the functional capabilities of PwDs. 

Rehabilitation and Social Security:  

The DEPwD recognizes the importance of comprehensive rehabilitation services for PwDs and administers the working according to the Rehabilitation Council of India Act, 1992.                                         It supports the establishment of rehabilitation centers, vocational training programs, and early intervention services. The department also facilitates various social security schemes to ensure financial stability and social protection for PwDs and their families.
